Fruit & vegetables

Fruit and vegetables contain fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They are also low in fat and calories.

There are two types of fibre:

  1. Soluble fibre. This can be digested. It helps to reduce your cholesterol levels.
  2. Insoluble fibre. This passes through your gut without being digested. It helps your bowels work properly.

Eating foods that are high in fibre helps you to feel fuller for longer.

There are many types of fruit and vegetables. You can eat any that you enjoy. Note that potatoes are not a vegetable.

The sugars in fruit are also natural sugars. These are not the type of sugar you need to cut down.

You should eat a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables. These can be fresh, frozen, canned in natural juice, or dried.

Because fruit juices and smoothies have their fibre removed, we should drink no more than 150 ml per day.
