Annual health check
All people with diabetes should have a formal health check once a year.
This health check allows your doctors to monitor your health.
This annual review looks at:
- How good your long-term blood glucose control is.
- What your cholesterol levels are.
- What your blood pressure is.
- If you have any problems in your eyes that might be caused by your diabetes.
- How well your kidneys are working.
- If there are any signs of your diabetes causing any problems with the blood circulation in your feet.
- Advice to support you physically, emotionally, and mentally.
You should try to quit smoking if you smoke.
You should try not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week.
Your annual health check is a good chance to speak to your doctor or nurse if you want help to stop smoking or reduce your drinking.
They will be able to signpost you to support groups for advice on cutting down on your alcohol consumption and stopping smoking.
